Rana’s new blog story:Time is temporary but a film is forever

“Time is temporary but a film is forever” I think this quote came out because I don’t have a release for a while now.

Before ‘Leader’, I always said that I wanted to do an alternative film that follows a mainstream hero’s journey; ‘Leader’ was just that. I had a few reservations on the second half of the film and how the love story would play out eventually. As much as I loved the idea of the protagonist cheating a girl for the well being of the people, I just had a different view on how it could develop given the screen time of the film. I voiced it out, but being my first film, it didn’t matter to most. Not complaining at all, because I got all I wanted from the film, because Sekhar helped bring out my personality on screen in the most unique way possible, while the rest were hell bent on making me into an action hero.

So I finished Debut 1 – a Telugu film, which had a reasonably good reception both at the BO and with the critics. Then Debut 2 in Hindi ‘Dum Maro Dum’ came as a pleasant surprise to me, because after a Telugu film I was looking for a larger Telugu film or a bi-lingual (Telugu-Tamil) film ideally. So, in a way God blessed me with extra love and gave me a speedy second film in Hindi.

Then came the monstrous task of choosing the next script. Lots of script readings, lots more narrations, many stories waiting to be told some even went up to the 5th and 6th drafts and then got adrift in the script development process. Heard stories from almost everyone – top directors and writers to young and upcoming ones. Working with so many diverse kinds of people, I had lots of questions that I was unable to voice plainly. Similarly they had a lot of questions to ask of me “Who is he to ask us to change? What does he know? He’s only one film old… little more graciously though.I know I’m one film old and I don’t have the right, but surely do have the capability and understanding in terms of story development, screenplay structure, character graphs, that I’ve been learning for years now.

Key issue with most storytellers today is that many of them don’t write start to end, they start shooting before they have a full bound script; they work with shooting drafts or ideas and concepts and find the film in the process of making it. Works very well for them, but not for me.

I’d like to know what I’m getting into quite clearly and right from the beginning. Whether it works or not, if it works it’s great and if it doesn’t I clearly understand the mistakes I shouldn’t make in my next. That eliminates quite a few filmmakers from me.I first and foremost want a genre film. I fail to understand the term “Mass, Action,Love Story with Entertainment.”

I think, I can only handle one and maybe two of the above at a time. I often keep wondering where is the real cinema I grew up watching,I can’t find a ‘Pathala Bhairavi’, a ‘Gundamma Katha’ or a ‘Danaveerasura Karna’ an ‘Alluri Sitaramaraju’, a ‘Shiva’, a ‘Swati Muthyam’ today. The only thing that excites me in Telugu cinema today is to see the success of a variety of genres with films like ‘Arundhati’, ‘Yae Maya Chesavae’ and ‘Leader’ all being genre specific films and did commercially well at the BO. To me it’s fairly straight and simple – is the film engaging or is it not, do I have fun reading it, will I have fun doing it and finally will I have fun watching it. If I truly like it, I know they are a lot out there who’ll like it as well.

And another interesting challenge these days, which was never the case in Telugucinema, is the casting. Problem one, we have a very limited number of girls to work with who speak Telugu, second I am 6ft 3inches which means the girl atleast has to be 5’6 and above to make a good screen pair (Please don’t give me examples of Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, they make a fab pair but I’m not Mr. Big B). And from the natural choices of that are available there is Kajal, Genelia,Tamanna, Ileana, Richa, Samantha and others who fit my screen age but, their dates aren’t available till late this year or almost Jan next year simply because of the number of films they’re working in. Very happy for them but it’s not good for me.So hence planning a film schedule around these dates is almost next to impossible.

Another mammoth task is the budget that comes into play with me as the lead, there’s a clear limit to my budgets – my first was ‘Leader’ not ‘Magadheera’. And each story has a limitation for the genre it’s belongs; for example an action film can pull larger audiences than a simple comedy, a family drama can bring in more audiences than a thriller. And being a producer myself, more so coming from a production family, I’d like all; Producers, Buyers, Distributors and Exhibitors to reap benefits from myfilms.

Being born in Chennai and brought up in Hyderabad, I grew up speaking Telugu, Tamil and Hindi. So I am blessed in a way to venture out into cinema in different languages. And try to eventually grow to a sizeable market, to create all the stories I can, and with lesser financial constraints. Am working on it, let’s see how it goes. Since time is temporary but a film is forever, I want people to remember me in a film that I’m proud to have been a part of.

Nice write up Rana…It is interesting to read the challenges faced by actors. LOL….this whole thing about not having a bound script reminds me of a parallel story in software. Being a software engineer, I am equally frustrated with the concept of Agile development methodology where we go in without having clarity on the final product :) So, I can totally relate to the pain…Good luck with the rest of your career…you have a great path ahead of you!

hey, m preeti from tamil nadu,
i always wanted to know what politics is all about, because tats something that non of the Indians understand. and i think a lot about how its gonna be when qualified individual run our country. its hard to imagine seriously, that too without an example. Shekar has done a great job portraying it in “LEADER”.. and i personally think u suited the role 100%..
saw your other movie “nenu naa rakshasi”.. good but not great…

and one think i was happy about after reading your blog is, your idea about genre films… directors confuse audience, and at the end of the film we are left to decide the genre by our own.. but its working well with Indian cinema.. your views are good, actually awesome… keep up the good work and expecting great outcome from your side.. all the best..

    Hi,

I am not much of movie buff really, have always been selective on the ones I watch.
Recently watched couple of movies you were in, I felt you could probably work a little more on your expressions(facial/tone of voice), that will help not losing your audience and makes the experience totally worth it.

PS: Good job with the blog. If its you who has come up with this writing(I mean not like a PR doing the work on your behalf types),then you might as well try your career on this front. You just might have a shot at it professionally too.

    Good Luck!

    Hi Rana

Your subject in films is extraordinary ..
There are 3 major aspects here-

a.As Your Grandpa says there are always a good movie n bad movies that time , Suresh Productions had some loses n hits also. it is n it will be continuing also …

    b. Piracy – It was not there when Swatimutyam/ gundamma katha n shiva was there…therefore the taste of movies are getting lost …For ezample your film NENU NAA RAKSHASI is a Excellent movie but …

    c. Every week new films are releasing n some are dubbed ( which we cannot stop).

This article made me LITERALLY LOL. Not that it’s comical. But just because you sound exactly like me when you vent out emotion. I like how you keep the diplomacy yet still find a way to say what you truly feel. It’s interesting. I’ve never thought of an actors’ life, and how it could possibly be so complicated and tough all at the same time. Well, I hope everything goes well for you and you end up making tons of films. You’re blessed in every way. Just be patient and make sure you count you’re blessings. Goodluck! I hope I get to meet you someday :)

Hello Rana….firstly welcome to the movie world…and congrats on making it to bollywood too….

Your interviews are really genuine.Watched one with Lakshmi…and man you were impressive…pointed out what was the trouble :)

I wish to see more of your films ..All the best in your script selection(thats the heart of a movie)….way to go…..

  16. Soumya says:

    Hey Rana,
Watched DMD. Was kinda disappointed and was left wanting for more. Dude, you shoulda been there more on screen and probably spoken more too. Haven’t seen any of your other movies. So this was, like, the first movie of yours I saw. So I guess I don’t really have a yardstick to compare your other work. Would love to watch Leader sometime.

True, movies are timeless and are kind of unerasable footprints. Imagine, your work is out there for the whole world to watch. Good work will remain in everyone’s memory and botch it up even slightly, it still remains for everyone to see, in fact for quite a few generations. Unlike my work, you can’t go back and erase it or correct it.

Anyways, if even one of us was left wanting to see more of you onscreen, consider your job well done. (I repeat, I would’ve loved to see more of you in the movie)Strangely, the only scene of DMD that stayed in my mind was the scene where you stick those packets in the crematorium. Priceless. :)

BTW do you actually reply to the comments that you get for your blog posts?

PS: Couldn’t help proofreading, (A job hazard of mine) articles are usually not capitalized in a blog title. :)

  17. M says:

    Hi Rana!!
Watched DMD last night. My heart skipped a beat. Mind blowing looks, superb acting. And the best..your eyes. They are to ‘live’ for man.
My wishes for many more ‘forever’ films to you.

    best.

  20. Richard Divakar says:

    Hi Rana sir,
I don’t know whether u’ll ever get time to read this.. coz i just see the number of comments reaching 300!!! but one thing i want to say is that, i like the kind of person u r in life sir. The kind of journey u had prior to moving into ‘visual media’, i think serves as a great advantage for u in terms of movie knowledge, experience gained and in & outs of every department of the industry! I’ve been watching many of ur interviews and as i understand, Arjun Prasad in LEADER was not so difficult for u to play as u had those corporate leadership skills, developed through years.
The idea of becoming an actor is for almost everybody – ‘no need of education’. I think u’ve changed that idea too. Being so talented and intelligent, u r now before the camera to prove urself in the visual media as well. All i can say is – “Sir, I wish u ALL THE VERY BEST and I wish to see you scaling new heights in the days to come.”
    Love you sir,
    Ur fan,
    RD(Richard Divakar)!

    Hi Rana,

I was happy to find your blog. I really wish you good luck with your movies…

I am sure your films are awesome and all movies will be remembered forever. As an RJ and being around I feel that you need to concentrate on quality of a movie rather then quantity. Try not to rush as you mentioned that God gave you offer for Dum maro dum so, you will surely get more offers. Movie will stay forever if it will is done with high quality and best efforts!!

Hi Rana, I saw your movie “nenu Naa Rakshasi” I was very much disappointed with that movie, and it is remake and copied from the movie called “kill me later” Directed by Diana Lustig, frankly speaking even the Directed has copied the movie poster also, it was simply cut and paste theory, one thing I want to give as an audience you people always talks about Piracy, then what you people are doing copying one english movie and dropping on our heads is that not called piracy.

    • raja2930 says:

Hi Rana Garu, I saw your movie “nenu Naa Rakshasi” I was very much disappointed with that movie, and it is remake and copied from the movie called “kill me later” Directed by Diana Lustig in 2001, frankly speaking even you copied the movie poster also, it was simply cut and paste theory, one thing I want to give you my advise as an audience you people always talks about Piracy, then what you people are doing copying one english movie and dropping on our heads is that not called piracy, Rana garu I love your movie “leader”, we need a pleasant taking when the movie starts, you please see all countries movies, when I saw world movies I felt very bad about out telugu cinema. we didn’t have Maniratnam and Shankar in our telugu field, you always run behind big heroes and want to make sensations but you are not following a tight screenplay which suites your movie, if you are not confident about script then don’t start the shooting, take your own time and then come to one conclusion and then you start the shooting, “Rana garu prapancha cinema pichchi kukkalaga parigedutunte manam bochchu kukkalaga chatikela padi koorchunnaam, oka vishayam cheppana manam bratuku teruvu kosam cinemaalu teestunte, world cinema vaallu aatma trupti kosam teestunnaaru, infact kalani bratikinchadam kosam teestunnaru”, You know Rana Garu I don’t know how many intelligent people are working under your production but please make them perfectly in writing screenplay you please see Alejandro Gunzalez, Takeshi Kimano, Robert Zemickis, Steven Speieberg, James Cameron, Johnny To movies and few others, I have seen Your Father talking to my Director few times on Phone. Then I understood he is really a professional in business, I was more impressed with his attitude towards Film business, I myself working as an Assistant Director, here I have seen highly egoistic people which you can’t find anywhere on earth, I have seen number of Director how they get impressed in such a small point and make a big movie which is more than 30 Crores, you please see Shakti, Teenmar, Khaleja, Nenu Na Rakshasi, Chintakaayala Ravi, Naagavalli, Puli, Vastaadu Naa Raju, Jummandi Naadam, Orange, Jalsa, I want to give my clarification on each movie.

Khaleja: Trivikram Srinivas is a very good Director of Athadu movie only. but after watching Khaleja I came to know that Trivikram is carrying 2kg of flesh in his brain and nothing more than that.

Puri Jagannath: He has given the biggest in telugu film History like Pokiri, but after that he never changed his taking or screenplay, I don’t think that he would never change in near future. the same taking, keeping dutch, panning, tilting, 4 blocks in one screen, same careless dialogues with no punch, and now “nenu Naa Raakshasi” literally copied from the English movie “kill me later” not even sparing the movie poster.

Jayanth C. Paranjee: Teen maar, the movie looks like that he never took any kind of participation in script, it looks like Producer Ganesh has given the DVD of Love AAj Kal to Trivikram Srinivas and he has taken the highest remuneration to translate the script, I couldn’t saw any punch dialogues in that movie, Trivikram didn’t carry the essence of the script, he simply wrote it that’s all. he doesn’t know what he wrote, I think he did not read his own script after the completion.

Meher Ramesh: I don’t know how he could make a such a movie with Jr. NTR. Director literally spoiled that subject, if he want to make a movie on shakti peetalu, he should have contacted Mr. J.K.Baaravi, or Vijayendra Prasad (Dir.Rajamouli’s Father) to make a perfect script, but he ruthlessly proved himself that he is more than an Idiot.

I don’t have to curse all these Director already Ram Gopal Varma cursed in his move song in Appalraju, “Talent evari sottu kaadu”. my only sincere request is you people work on the script for years together but we need a memorable movie but not like “Nenu Naa Raakshasi”

    Hi Rana,

Some people who have just debuted in the year 2010 need to roll up their sleeves and keep a watch at you.

I am seriously telling you, when I walked out of “Dum Maro Dum”
the first thing I did was called a friend who’s a celebrity manager in Mumbai and told her she’d make a fool out of herself if she doesn’t get an opportunity to work with you, she laughed at me on the other side of the phone and said, “baby I know Viren and I already gave him my feed back about people’s reaction in Mumbai”, she also assured me that while she is going to be in Hyderabad she’s going to make and effort to see you.

Having watched my dear old friend Ranveer Singh soar heights of success in his first film Band Baaja Baarat, I actually wanted to pick up the cell phone and tell him, “Boy you better watch your back”

This is not it, I come back home google about you, message Suri Kumar to help me get a subtitled version of “LEADER” so that I can watch the better cinema that lies in you at your best and then also change my blackberry picture to your image that I grabbed from google :D

My friends actually BBM me saying woman be happy with Ranveer Singh let us have RANA hhahahahhahahhahahahahhaaaa

I seriously could not stop laughing when I saw all my friends from the same industry actually react to a new comer in Bollywood like that. (Woman I tell you) :P

You have a super long way to go my dear friend, rest assured you are bound to do well with Bollywood. Be focused, choose the right scripts and you have lots of success In sha allah in store for you.

Dum Maro Dum – must say pretty impressive role for a debutant in bollywood, but honestly, you could have been much better…. its actually your personality that works wonders for you on screen and not your acting. But you grow as an actor wisely only with experience. (I might have to rephrase my last sentence in this paragraph coz I still have to watch “LEADER” which I am going to tonight.

Good luck to you with everything dear, looking forward to seeing some more of your work creating only better reviews in Indian cinema :)

And if god willed our path’s may just cross and am sure it will be an honor to work with you.

    Cheers,
    T

Recently I watched Rana’s interview in “Prematho Mee Lakshmi” show. I have to say I am surprised and at the same time happy to hear from a person who thinks differently to bring a change in the industry. I have been a Fan of Telugu Cinema for a long time. This might be due to the fact that mother tongue is Telugu. But I agree with Rana on the point that things have changed quite dramatically in the past decade and we hardly see genres in the industry. I still remember the wide variety of movies done in the 80s and 90s which showed the creative side of movie making
    Examples –
    Abhilasha
    Killer
    Abhinandana
    Maharshi
    Rudra Veena
    Aditya 369
just to name a few ….
All these movies had a specific genre and had a strong story as a background.

I am not a fan of any Hero but I am a devotee of Telugu Cinema. I sincerely appreciate your thought process and wish to all the best in pursuing your dream.

  30. Murali says:

    Hi Rana,

You are absolutely true about the telugu film industry both big screen and small screen. There is nothing new to watch out for in telugu movies. In the recent past the only movies I appreciated are Leader and Vedam. I literally stopped watching telugu movies from the past four years. I go to a telugu movie only when some one says its not just about another love story or some family drama. Telugu industry should come up with some innovative scripts. Hope to see you coming up with some different films. Anyway Good luck for Dum Maaro Dum and Nenu Naa Rakshasi.

  31. Laxmi says:

    Hi,

Please keep translating your words into actions. Its a bliss to watch someone in your position to make good movies and meaning to entertain properly. You are putting in really good efforts. Please do not give into BS of image and at any cost dont do films where people challenge gravity without logic behind (Getting hit by a hero without any super powers or divine intervention do not constitute for logic). All the best dude.

    Thanks,
    Raghavendra

  35. Sharon says:

    Hey Rana,
Good analysis of the current state of Telugu cinema. I agree that scripts must be full-bound. In fact, most Telugu movies I watch are merely based on an idea/a thought/ a concept. And the audience today is getting smarter; It is imperative for movie makers to elaborate beyond the inception of an idea to capture the viewer’s attention and SATISFACTION for the entirety of the film.
Genres and Telugu movies clearly don’t gel! It is beyond my comprehension how an actor in a dignified role can jump into teenmaar aka mass elements or vis-a-versa!!!
The point abt actresses is debatable. I mean in real life not every tall guy is paired with a gal of abt the same height. Moreover, scripts could involve a tall guy and a short girl. It is also fairly easy to carry them ;)

One last note: time and film are not separate; in that, a film is permanent and permanence is a measure of time!!!

I saw your interview with your grandpa on jayapradham on youtube. It was my first time watching you in a talk show, the way you speak telugu is pretty kool. I enjoyed the movie leader very much. I hope you make many more good movies. Having a telugu heroine would be nice too, it would look more natural onscreen when they use their own voice instead of lip-sinking.
    Anyways, Good Luck! =)
I wonder if you do read your blog replies.

Saw your episode in Lakshmi talk show. It is so pity that reading and writing in telugu is considered as a special qualification. Watching your video I remember my teacher asking me to say Vishwaksenudu when I was a child and I could not…. haha…

  45. AmaR says:

    Hi Rana

Watched ur interview in the show… I was eagerly waiting to watch just to know your thoughts and views on various issues. I dont know about what others saw …But I saw the pain in your voice and eyes on the current state of TELUGU FILM Fraternity and where TELUGU CINEMA is heading.I agree completely with you that we are dependent on people from other states for most of the things. You can count on your fingers how many good movies we make in telugu ( Am talkin about films like Anand, Godavari,..Gaganam…Ye Maaya chesave…Leader…Gamyam..Prasthanam).. I watch films from other languages and feel that we do not make those kind of movies which doesnt fall into the main stream cinema because the audience doesnt accept them so easily … there are some movies which are being remade in telugu with changes and movies are bombing at the box office… Movies like LBW runs in a single theatre in Hyd inspite of being branded as a good film. I saw this pain in you when you are expressing your views … I hope people like you can definitely bring some change in the way we make movies.

What i expressed is my view on the films we make and may be i jumped from one topic to the other.

Good to see some sensible writing from Tolly actor, keep up the work and good luck.

Just a free advice about your body language, while you were giving the interview I found you to be using lot of hand gestures, it’s good for body language but I think you are doing bit over and it’s dominating in your speech. I’m no one to tell you, sorry.

I love your vision and thoughts.I live in US, I have a brilliant idea where none of the directors in 2011 can make my idea unless we make them sit and have them do it. You have my email, reach me I will explain you “THE” idea. If you think its waste of time to email me back, I would consider I wasted my time being in your blog. Anyway, let me be in hope that you will email me for my idea, by the way I do not have time to pull any pranks. No other intentions except sharing my idea.

  51. Anisha says:

Hey.. can i suggest u something for the heroine problem…

there are so many models who are interested to make it big in movie world.. their height might be correct for u.. acting skills might be an issue.. Still i believe that if u audition 20-50 u’ll get one for sure..

Audience will be happy to have new girls on screen.. If my guess is right u might have already thought about this also..

  52. ANAND SAGAR says:

hi first of all congrats for having a good characterisation & a lot of fire in ur words. there are many good story tellers who are unable to reach the places where u people r staying. hopefully the gates wil be opened for those story writers and story tellers.

First of all Nice blog…….U r thinking is too good, i liked it a lot……All the best…

  61. Sreedhar says:

    Hi Rana,
I have seen leader for ‘n’ number of times and i wish atleast there should be one politician like you but unfortunately we don’t have any one rite now. And your yesterdays interview in ETV was awsome, being from a such great filmy family your very down to earth, the way you have spoken was very good.
I completly agree with you on some points like we don’t have any telugu female actors, one thing i don’t understand is whether they are no telugu girls who wants to work on films or our film makers are not casting them as everyone feels that imported once have good value.
second is telugu films should come out of formula based movies 6 songs and 4 fights, noway days no one are enjoying this kind of movies.

  62. vijay says:

    Hi Rana
Yesterday I saw your TV Show with lakshmi…
    Excellent telugu speaking Guy..
Coming to Blog what You said is right…
Telugu Industry is releasing almost 4 to 6 Films per every Month but there is no film like real cinema.
Before making it they should know the difference between film and cinema.
Film means business in Telugu Industry
Cinema means mass, action, comedy romance, love and they are following 3 fights,6 songs formula in Telugu Industry
Here Money Kills Talent, Nobody is intersted in taking risks.
Rana alteast we are excepting a real telugu cinema not telugu film.
    All the best..

  63. Phanindra says:

You are probably one of the most well spoken actors I’ve watched on TV. I think you were absolutely fantastic in Leader but the story did have a huge role to play in the success of the film too. So it’d be interesting to see how your subsequent films work out for you.

On the Hindi film though,I have the fear that you might be playing a menial role contrary to what you said.

Good luck on all your future films and hope you continue to be successful.

PS: I’m actually surprised that you do take your blog seriously and reply too.
